Have you ever done all your errands only to come home and realize you forgot the one thing you went out for? Yes… I hate to say it, but I do that. A lot. Can I blame it on kids? How about the weather? Hmmm…the alignment of the planets?
Either way, I really hate it when that happens.
So it happened, and I decided I was too lazy to go to the store and I’d rather stay home and do dishes than go back to the store. So… I made me some buns! Errr- rolls…okay, both.
But… before I continue with bread products I have to do some household news! Remember my household news segment, right? Ok- get ready…start playing that “news-music” in your head.
Swim lessons started this week. Have you ever been so happy you couldn’t stop smiling? This was her. She grinned underwater, I am sure of it.
I’m a proud mama.
Jeez, that it for household news. Really.
Not too much news can be good, though.
Especially with the big world events. I am totally aware of the world events of which are both heartbreaking and frightening. But… I think you guys can all read about that stuff from more credible sources than myself. It’s not my job to speak of such matters. Only to express my sorrow and concerns…and to pray for all those in need.
My job, right here is to help you make buns when you don’t want to go back out. Because you forgot them… because the planets weren’t aligned right for the purchase of buns to take place. Crap happens. It’s okay.
Flour. Yeast.Sugar.Salt.Water and butter.
Got it? Good.
And…there is an optional little secret. Vital wheat gluten. It adds body to your dough and helps it to rise much better. Wait. Much better. I think that’s breaking a language art skill. I am almost certain it is….but I don’t know how else to say “much better.” Oh well…
This is my dough after it anf the Kitchen Aid went at it. Kneading, that is.
Woah. My dough almost runneth over.
This is the best part…especially if you’re pissed at something.
Punch it down. No, I wasn’t pissed at something. I try not to get that way too much…causes wrinkles and grey hair. My mama told me that.
You know what? My hands are starting to look like my mom’s used too….just saying…
Time for Palmolive.
I needed rolls, because we were having cheesesteak sammies. Mmmm. No brainer recipe. Peppers, onions, steak and cheese. Bliss.
I got 8 hamburger buns and 4 hoagie rolls from this batch. My freezer now runneth over with carbs. Oh yum!

Recipe: hoagie rolls and burger buns
Summary: easy homemade burger bun and hoagie roll recipe
Ingredients
- 5 c flour 2 tbs yeast 3 tbs sugar 1 tbs salt 2 1/4 c hot water 3 tbs melted butter
Instructions
- In a mixer, with the paddle attachment, combine the yeast, sugar, salt, butter and hot water. Combine. Set 10 minuted. Switch out the blade to the dough hook. Add flour slowly, 1/2 c at a time until the mixture pulls away from the bowl. Mix for 5 minuted at med-low speed. Place into an oiled bowl and apply a light layer of oil to the top portion, cover with a towel. Rise 1 hour. The best place to rise is in a microwave that had 1c of water heated in it for 3 minutes. The residual heat and moisture is great for dough to rise. After rising, punch down, allow dough to rest 15 minutes and then shape. For buns: Use a tangerine sized ball and shape into a circle. For rolls: Use an orange size ball and shape into logs. Allow to rise 45 minutes. Brush tops with beaten egg. Bake at 400 for 15 minutes.
