salisbury steak

Okay, let me admit something… I have never made Salisbury steak. Weird, huh? So, when I got these Shiitake mushrooms at my local market, that is the “recipe” that came to mind.  I’m still not sure if I should call it Salisbury steak- or seasoned beef patties with a caramelized onion and shiitake red wine sauce. Hmmm. Either way, it’s one of those down home comfort meals- great for rainy nights, just a plain ol simple mama made meal. Sometimes ya just need “mom food” – no matter how refined your taste gets.

what I did to make this is really too simple- I almost feel silly giving instructions- it’s like saying how to make a PB&J…but, here goes:

take some ground beef, 1/4 c panko crumbs, 1 egg, chopped garlic, salt, pepper, 1/4 finely diced onions

form into “steak-shaped” patties

brown in a skillet. Remove from the skillet.Set aside.

In the same skillet, add some sliced onions (like pic above) get ’em nice n golden…. and then add chopped mushrooms.

Allow to cook down for about 5-7 minutes and set aside.

In the same pan, melt 2 tbs butter-add 2 tbs flour and mix to make a paste. Add 1 beef bouillon cube and 1/2 c water.

Add a few splashes of good dry red wine. (One you would drink…heck, have a glass while you cook!)

Like this:

It should look thick n creamy…. add a splash of worchestershire sauce, and fresh ground pepper, salt to taste….

add the patties and top with the onions and mushrooms and simmer for about 15-20 minutes. Enjoy!

We ate ours with corn and mashed ‘tatoes….. mom food at it’s finest.

come back and visit tomorrow… I have some friends for you to meet…
