Mmmm, Sangria. The essence of summer all wrapped up with wine. Perfect when beer is too heavy and wine is too formal.
Another reason to make it? It’s hot out, at least here it is. When I say hot I mean it’s stifling. Steamy. Sweaty. Stinky. Ew.
Sangria can help to fix that, along with a shower.
My Sangria is a combination of this and that and no real recipe per say, I eyeball things-since I can’t give y’all my eyeball, I will do my best with measurements…
First get some fruit, anything goes (except bananas, maybe…) I used:
1 nectarine
1 peach
1 apple
1 orange
1 lime
slice and dice and add it to a big pitcher.
Now, add:
1 bottle red* wine (I use Cabernet, red zinfandel is good, too)
*you can also do this with white wine.
add 3/4 c peach schnapps
splash of Grand Marnier or other orange liquor.
3 cinnamon sticks
1/4- 3/4 c sugar*
*yes, I know this is a broad range… it depends on the sweetness of the wine you use, and how sweet you like your sangria. I like mine rather dry, so I don’t use as much.
Let everything “marry” in the pitcher (chilling) at least 8 hrs.
Pour over ice and top with a splash of club soda right before serving.
Now, what to serve alongside? Glad you asked.
These. Shrimp salad stuffed avocados. Elegant and easy.
take “some ” cooked, peeled shrimp – I say “some” because it depends on how many people you are feeding. For me, it was 1/2lb.
Chop them up a bit and set aside
Dice finely:
1 stalk celery
2 scallions
add to the shrimp and toss in:
2 tbs lime mayonnaise. (if you don’t have that, mayo and 1 tbs lime juice works)
1 tbs fresh dill
fresh black pepper and salt to taste.
Just before serving, cut an avocado into 4 wedges and spoon the salad into the middle. Now, you can also go for the gusto and serve a half avocado- but, then it may be more of a meal.
Isn’t that the perfect little summery treat? I guess for adults… you’re right. Hmm, maybe I will come up with a summer kid snack- ants on a log with some pink lemonade? Now, that’s good there, too!
By the way, thank you to all my new likers on facebook. It makes me happy to be able to gripe about things to y’all. Feel free to gripe back. We’re friends. That’s what friends do. ♥
